Freebies for UTD Students, Faculty and Staff

There’s an interesting conversation going on in the Virtual Cafe area in the eLearning Student Forum. A student asked what freebies do UTD students get. There are several online resources that I wanted to mention here that many people on campus do not realize we have access to….

Deeply discounted software

We actually get reduced prices on several software packages. Below are instructions on how to access more info. You’ll find pretty good prices (i.e. full version of Office 2007 for $33; Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade $34).

  1. Go to the UTD Tech Store website (or visit the tech store on campus).
  2. Click on the [Enter site for Students, Faculty & Staff] button
  3. Click the “Student, Faculty & Staff Software – University Special Pricing” link at the top of the menu bar on the left side of the screen.

Free enterprise version of McAfee antivirus software

Below are instructions on how to access.

  1. Go to
  2. Click on ‘Secure download of UTD software’.
  3. Click the ‘Login Here’ link for Choice 2.
  4. Login using your NetID and password.
  5. Read the statement and click [I accept] (if appropriate).
  6. The next screen will include the instructions and files needed to install.

Free access to online journals via the Library website

You guys have free access to a huge list of online journals and publications through the library. For example, many of you are CS/CE/SE/TE (etc.) students, and the subscriptions to the various ACM and IEEE publications is really expensive — well, you folks have completely free access to all their publications via the online journals area of the library website. You can browse through full-texts of all of them.
(My personal favorite — I was recently looking for a new car, and I was able to access Consumer Reports via the library website and look at all the ratings and decided which car I wanted.)

Below are instructions on how to access.

  1. Go to the Library website.
  2. Click on the ‘Distance Learning’ link in the top banner.
  3. Click the ‘Electronic Journals’ link (or any other of these links you might be interested in).
  4. Click on the ‘Connecting From Off-Campus’ link in the upper-right corner.

I’m on campus right now, so I can’t tell you what exactly to click from this point forward, but I’ve done this before from home so here’s what I remember. I believe the next screen asks you to type in your UTD ID and either your last name of your birthdate (can’t remember). Once you’re logged in, you can then search through the alphabetical list of journals.
